    Equality Statement

    All pupils and staff at The Beeches Primary School have the opportunity to fulfil their potential whatever their race, religious belief, sex, sexual orientation, age or marital status.

    The Equality Act 2010 was introduced to ensure protection from discrimination, harassment and victimisation on the grounds of specific characteristics (referred to as protected characteristics). This means that schools cannot discriminate against pupils or treat them less favourably because of their sex (gender), race, disability, religion or belief, gender reassignment, sexual orientation or pregnancy or maternity.

    The Act introduced requires all schools to comply with the Public Sector Equality Duty (PSED)

    The School stands against all forms of discrimination; has a commitment to tackle prejudice in our community; and aims to meet its obligations under the PSED by having due regard to:

    1. Promoting cultural understanding and awareness of different religious beliefs between different ethnic groups within our school community.
    2. Monitoring and promotion of the involvement of all groups of pupils in the extra-curricular life of the school, especially pupils with special educational needs and disabilities.
    3. Actively closing gaps in attainment and achievement between pupils and all groups of pupils; especially pupils eligible for free-school meals, pupils with special educational needs and disabilities, looked after children and pupils from minority ethnic groups.
    4. Continuing to improve accessibility across the school for pupils, staff and visitors with disabilities.

    5. Endeavouring to ensure diversity in the staff body and in leadership roles.
    6. Reducing the incidence of the use of prejudice related language by all members of the school community.

    7. Addressing unconscious bias through training for staff and Personal, Social and Health Education for pupils.


    Specific Duties:

    1. By July 2023 our staff will feel confident in recognising unconscious bias and in responding effectively to prejudice related incidents.
    2. By the end of the academic year 2023, the school will have completed a Connected Communities Project where therapeutic approaches; positive relationships and safe spaces have been created to reduce the amount of time children with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs to spend out of the classroom.
    3. By July 2023 we will implement a curriculum that enables all, including lower-attaining and disadvantaged pupils, to engage with challenging subject knowledge and powerful arguments affecting their world.
